Fintech & Digital Currency Regulation

James Ramsden KC is recognised as pre-eminent in disputes concerning Fintech & Digital Currency Regulation.

On 28 September 2018 James Ramsden KC obtained the first UK freezing and disclosure orders over cryptocurrency. In numerous successive applications for similar orders between October 2018 and June 2019, he forged an unrivalled expertise in tracing and securing cryptocurrency in domestic and cross-border claims. The orders were novel because they were not just the first occasion that UK courts have addressed this technology, but they were also based on proprietary claims. They included successful orders for disclosure against European and US based ISPs and trading platforms.

This largely unregulated sector is especially prone to fraud and the risk of money laundering. Astraea Group is an expert in identifying and tracing the origins and flows of cryptocurrency and has secured unprecedented cooperation from banks and FX traders on the basis of the orders for disclosure we have obtained.

James Ramsden KC was consequently featured in the March 2019 edition of the market leading Butterworths Journal of International Banking and Financial Law with an article giving insight into this ground-breaking expertise.

James is very academically gifted and analyses problems very well.
